How to Fix Water Leaks in a High-Pressure Pump: Common Causes and Solutions.

Analysis of the Components of a High-Pressure Plunger Pump

1. Leakage at Connections and Hoses

Cause: Worn-out O-rings, loose fittings, or improperly sealed threads.
Solution:
  • Inspect O-rings and seals for cracks or deformation; replace them if necessary.
  • Tighten threaded connections carefully (avoid over-tightening).
  • Use seal tape or thread sealant for better sealing.

2. Internal Plunger Pump Leakage

Cause: Damaged gaskets, worn plunger seals, or valve seat erosion.
Solution:
  • Shut down the high pressure pump and disassemble the housing.
  • Check plungers, seals, and valve plates for cracks or wear.
  • Replace aged seals (usually every 500–1000 hours of operation).
  • Repair or replace the pump head if it has cracks.

3. Water in the Crankcase (Oil-Water Mixture)

Cause: Worn plunger oil seals, allowing water to enter the crankcase.
Solution:
  • Replace the oil seals and inspect the plunger surface for scratches or corrosion.
  • Change the crankcase oil to avoid bearing damage.

4. Leakage at Spray Gun or Nozzle

Cause: Worn valve core or damaged nozzle seals.
Solution:
  • Replace seals or the valve core inside the spray gun.
  • Inspect the nozzle for wear (long-term high pressure enlarges the orifice).

5. Preventive Maintenance Tips

  • Regularly check seals and O-rings, replacing them before failure.
  • Use clean water sources to prevent impurities from damaging seals.
  • Change pump oil regularly to avoid overheating and premature seal wear.
  • Drain the plunger pump before long-term storage, especially in winter, to prevent freeze damage.
